Current Focus of the Historical
Society: The Squire's Tavern Project
The Barkhamsted Historical Society has leased the building known as the
Squires Tavern located in Peoples Forest at 100 East River Road,
Barkhamsted. We are well into the goal of preserving this building
and implementing a plan of restoration.
This is a big project and we can use YOUR help. If you
would like to sit in on our Historical Society meetings, please feel
free to attend. If you like what you hear and want to get more
involved that would be great!
Squire's Tavern open to the public each
Wednesday 9 to noon and (starting May 6) Sunday 1 to 3 p.m.
New Hours! Starting May 6, 2007 the Squires Tavern is
open to the public on Sundays 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is in addition to our
current hours on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Barkhamsted Historical
Society is restoring the historic building at Peoples Forest called
Squire's Tavern. The work is well along and we invite you to stop by to
check it out. Although we are still working on the project there is still
a lot to see. Guides can show you around the building and also give you
some background on Barkhamsted history in general. Stop by and take a
look!

Squire's Tavern First Open House -
Sunday, July 15, 2001!
The weather was great and a fun time was had by all as
the Squire's Tavern was open for inspection by neighbors, friends,
supporters and the curious. A special ceremony marked the transfer
of the building from the State Department of Environmental Protection to
the Town of Barkhamsted and the Barkhamsted Historical Society. A
cart drawn by a team of oxen delivered officials to the ceremony.

Ceremony marking the transfer of the Squire's Tavern from the State to

Squire's Tavern Work Parties
We frequently have work parties at the Squire's Tavern.
These are usually on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 to noon and involve
several volunteers who get together for some coffee, conversation and oh
yes, some work. For example, one morning we took down a modern
interior bathroom wall and removed the debris. If you would like
to join us, send us an e-mail to find out when the next work party will
be or just take a chance and drop by on any given Wednesday morning to
see if we are there. The Squire's Tavern is located at 100 East
River Road, Barkhamsted, CT, about 1 mile north of the bridge in
